Department of Environmental Science

Background

The Department of Environmental Science was established in 2016 with the objective of imparting education on decision support science for sustainability of the global system by recognizing environmental issues due to changes at local, regional and global levels and responding to such changes in economically feasible, socially acceptable and ecologically viable manners. Currently, the department offers BS. The curriculum for this programme focuses on all important aspects of natural, social and economic environment, covering current problems of nature conservation, environmental quality, management and governance.

Description of the program

Environmental science is the field of science that studies the interactions of the physical, chemical & biological components of the environment and also the relationships and effects of these components with the organisms in the environment. 

Vision

Our vision is to develop as an institute of learning in Somali National University on environment coupled with research and development activities to rediscover man’s relation with nature. 

Mission

Our mission is to create a generation committed to promote change towards patterns of economic development that are environmentally sustainable and socially equitable through sustained efforts and implementation. 

Aim

Our aim is to develop human resource capable of generating, disseminating and extending knowledge for sustainable development.

Objectives 

Our objectives are to equip public in general and decision makers of the future in particular with:

  • Knowledge to support informed decision-making. 
  • Skills to mitigate and measures to adapt impact of climate change.
  • Attitudes to live responsibly with a consumption pattern, which is ecologically viable, economically feasible and socially equitable.

Core Value

The Department of Environmental Science values innovative and experiential approaches to graduate education and the explicit integration of natural and social sciences and the humanities. We value an integrated focus on conservation, climate change, ethics of the environment and resource management. We value inquiry-based learning, research, reflection and service learning as essential tools for engaging the environmental challenges of local, regional and international communities. The wellbeing of natural and human communities provides the academic and moral compass for our department and is reflected in our responsive curriculum.  

  1. Completion of secondary school with a minimum overall average of 50%
  2. Should bring the original and a copy of secondary school certificate
  3. Should bring Six (6) passport size photos with white background
  4. Should bring the original copy of a letter of good conduct issued by your secondary school
  5. Should bring a sponsorship letter from your guardian
  6. Should successfully pass an admission interview and/or test
  7. Pay non-refundable Processing and ID card fees of USD $50 (bank draft)

The SNU academic year consists of 42 weeks split into two semesters of 18 weeks each, the first beginning in August.
