About Faculty of Agriculture Environmental Science
The Faculty of Agriculture was the first faculty opened when Somali National University was founded 5 decades ago in 1971, the rationale behind being boosting agricultural production, meeting food demands of Somali population, alleviation poverty and cutting down dependency cycle on food imports and food aid.
The faculty has produced professionals who contributed significantly in the expansion of cropland area and in the escalation of cereal production by applying modern techniques and technologies.
The civil war that broke out in the country in 1991 collapsed academic system until the university re-opened in 2014 by which time the faculty renamed as Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences with two major departments, namely: General agriculture (with several sub Departments) and Department of Environmental Science.
This reflects the development of agricultural and environmental studies, in response to addressing food insecurity and climate change which is having a major impact on our country.
As one of the main leading faculties in the country, faculty play a major role to find solutions to the current agriculture and environment problems faced by the nations for producing trained individuals comprising of graduates who are visionary and competitive in the industrial arena.
To achieve this, the faculty has prepared to establish two new departments recently, namely: soil science and crop production, as well as further major departments, which are under process as a step forward.
The Faculty of agriculture currently offer programs in Bachelor of Agriculture Science, bachelor of Environmental Science, and bachelor of plant protection in addition to that the faculty is planning to establish two main postgraduate programs both in general agriculture and environmental science.
